鞍山市助康会新闻通讯

鞍山市首届特殊青少年运动会
20米竞走、40米轮椅竞速……九月二十日，在香港复康会的赞助和支持下，鞍山市助康会组织了鞍山历史上首届残疾人运动会——



鞍山市首届特殊青少年运动会。那天，鞍山市的70个残疾青少年在钢都小学参加了一场属于自己的小型“残奥会”。刚刚从北京残奥会夺得铜牌、凯旋的鞍山市助康会副会长裴莽，把小小的火炬传递给家乡的残疾青少年，同时也把坚强、奋斗的精神交给了孩子们。而这些行动不便的青少年，在特殊的赛场上成功构筑了自己曾经想都不敢想的“梦”——参加一场热闹的、激烈的比赛。



　　我们邀请了70多个身有各种残疾的“特殊青少年”和70多个来自钢都小学的小志愿者，共同参加了这场由鞍山市助康会主办的特殊青少年运动会。钢都小学的几名老师也来做我们的志愿者，做我们的教练和裁判。




　　“我和你，心连心，同住地球村，为梦想，千里行，相会在鞍山……”小型“残奥会”开幕式上，23岁的脑瘫青年北北和钢都小学的孩子共同演唱了稍加改编的奥运歌曲《我和你》，得到在场所有人最热烈的掌声和喝彩，也有很多人流下了感动的泪水。那一天，北北成了真正的明星。



　　19秒26，这是20米竞走比赛中一名脑瘫孩子的成绩。据现场的裁判老师介绍，一般的孩子10秒就能完成20米走，可脑瘫孩子需要付出惊人的努力。在这样的比赛中，规则、名次已经不重要了，他们中有很多孩子从来就没有尝试过运动，就更别提参加比赛了。当天的比赛中，有的孩子是由爸爸、妈妈搀扶着走向终点，有的孩子激动得几乎掉下眼泪。尽管走起来异常艰难，总是像要跌倒了，可是这些孩子仍顽强地走好每一步……
孙林鹏是20米竞走的男子第一名，脑瘫的后遗症导致腿部有些残疾。他说这是他第一次参加比赛，平时很少有机会运动，能有机会参赛就很高兴了，没想到还得了个第一名，会把这个第一名的奖品摆在家里做纪念的。



大部分前来参赛的孩子都是由家长们陪着，部分比赛还需要由家长和选手们配合才能完成。比赛时，裁判一声令下，家长们或推或拉，和自己的孩子一起使劲儿向终点冲去。不论是第一名还是最后一名，都争着到裁判那里查成绩，家长们为孩子的点滴进步感到自豪和高兴。



一位家长擦着激动的泪水对我们说：“其实，比赛的名次对于这些从七八岁到二十二三岁的孩子们来说并不重要，最重要的是，他们能够参加比赛，能够在比赛中绽开笑容。看到孩子笑得那么开心，家长们的心都醉了。在普通孩子看来非常简单的事儿，这些身有残障的孩子要付出太多的努力、汗水和意志才能做到，他们在努力生活，努力欢笑，鞍山的“残奥会”给了孩子们证实自己的机会，社会给了他们这样的机会。作为家长，他真的非常感谢鞍山市助康会为这些不幸的孩子付出的关爱。有了这么多关爱他们的人，自己的心里真是对生活有了更多的希望。”

Bethesda Rehabilitation Ministry of Anshan, China

First Paralympics in Anshan
September 20th, it was a big day for children with disabilies in Anshan. With the help of HongKong Society for Rehabilitation, Bethesda Ministry held its “first Paralympics” for these children in Anshan. It is also the first such Sports Day for disabled children in the history of the city. No doubt, it is a day they would never forget…



The venue was at the playground of GangDu Elementary School, the best one in Anshan. We invited more than seventy children with different disabilities and their parents to the Sports Day. Seventy students from the school were also invited as our volunteers. Their work was to make friends with our children and help them through the day. Some teachers from the school voluntarily came as our coach and judge.
The Sports Day started with a “torch relay”. Eight children were chosen as our torchers. The torch relay started by PeiMeng, who is the Assistant Director of Bethesda Ministry and also a winner of Beijing Paralympics. Children were very excited to do the relay on the real playground with a real Olympics Torch and a real “Olympic hero”.



A short Opening Ceremony started after the torch relay. Just like that happened in Bejing weeks ago, our song for paraolympics was an adapted “You and Me”: You and Me -- From one world -- We are family -- Travel dream -- A thousand miles -- Meeting in Anshan … The singers of that day were BeiBei and a girl from the school. BeiBei had an operation for a brain tumor years ago and is a bit mentally retarded. He is in our learning program now. The performance won a big applause and many had their tears in eyes.






19.26 seconds! This was the time for the “Gold Medal Winner” child for the item of “ 20-Meter Walking Race for Children with Cerebral Palsy (CP)”. According to a teacher as coach there, it would only take less then 10 seconds for an abled-bodies child for that distance, but for these children, it will take much strength and courage to participate… But at that moment, it seemed that rule and place in the competetion were no longer that important. Most of these children had never tried any sports activity before, and what counts for them was to participate and experience.






On the playground, children were supported by parents or volunteers for each game item. They stumbled to the terminal line and when they got there, we could see the excitement on their faces and tears in eyes.



Sun Linpeng was the the “Gold Medal Winner” for the Walking Race. He told me that this was his first time to be out of home and be with so many “miserable friends”, and he had never dreamed of such a day. He said that he was very happy to the Sports Day and would treasure the award he just got got as a permanent memento.

A mother told me in tears: “The place in the competetion is not very important for these children; The important thing is that they could come and participate, and experience the joy and excitement , just like every children of the same age. I enjoy seeing my daughter’s smile and her happy face in the games. I am really thank Bethesda Ministry for your love to my daughter! Your love and care really bring hope to us”.

生命中新的里程碑


今年的五月二十日，我在母亲和弟弟的陪同下，启程飞往位于加利福尼亚州的圣迭哥市，去见证我生命中的一个重大事件——参加康复咨询硕士课程的毕业典礼。自从2003年下旬以来，我一直在通过互联网学习圣迭哥州立大学的远程康复咨询课程，现在，收获的季节终于到来了……



.对于一位生活在中国的四肢瘫痪者而言，取得这样的成绩无疑是一个奇迹，因为大部分的残疾人还在为生存和基本生活需求而挣扎。对于在轮椅上的我来说，完成这个学业绝对是一个挑战，因为我还需要同时领导助康会的工作，参与其他一些事情，还要应对自己严重的残疾。如果没有众多朋友的支持和帮助，我是绝对无法坚持下来的。



这个成绩的取得其实“国际合作”的结果。起初，我告诉在香港的好友周敏姬小姐，我希望接受有关“残疾”方面的正规教育，并希望得到她的帮助。于是，周小姐通过她在加拿大的朋友，帮助我找到了这个课程。圣迭哥州立大学的朋友们非常热情地接受了我，并给予我全部的奖学金，我也从此成为他们唯一的中国学生。在过去的几年里，我不断地得到来自老师和同学的帮助。因为来自完全不同的文化，我在课堂里遇到的几乎所有东西都是新鲜和陌生的。这真是一次非同寻常的学习经历。现在，我可能是国内唯一接受过康复咨询教育的人。

我的好朋友奥迪斯医生是我最大

的支持者。他认为接受这个教育对我来说具有特殊的意义，非常有益于我以后的残疾人工作。奥迪斯医生希望我最终可以成为中美两国残疾人交往的使者。在我因为缺乏经费而迟疑去参加毕业典礼时，奥迪斯医生坚持我不能错过人生这个重要的时刻。他立即开始帮我筹款，并负担了大部分的费用。



在圣迭哥，我很高兴地得以与一些老朋友重逢，有来自香港的邓先生，洛杉玑的彭先生、旧金山的陈牧师……我居然见到了琼妮！他们都是专程来参加我的毕业典礼。奥迪斯医生尽管工作很忙，还专程从东岸飞来，整整陪了我一个星期，帮助我们安排参加毕业典礼的事宜。同时，我们还得到了圣迭哥中国教会朋友的大力帮助，使我们再次深深体会到来自上帝的爱。



与路易斯的相识对我有特殊的意义。他教会了我“独立”这个词对严重残障者的含义。路易斯也是一个四肢瘫痪的人，损伤程度与我完全相同，然而，他却过着非常独立的生活——他可以自己喝水，自己吃饭……甚至自己开车！许多年以前他就结了婚，现在领导着圣迭哥的残疾人独立生活中心，也就是我将去实习的地方。记得他曾和我说这样的话：只要你肯去努力，没有什么是不可能的。




毕业典礼的现场令我激动万分。开着轮椅缓缓走向主席台，接受我的毕业证书，我不禁心潮澎湃，思绪万千，过去十一年中所发生的事情一起涌上了心头：1997年那个黑暗的日子，致命事故后绝望的心情，死亡的挣扎，爱，希望，鼓励，信心……今天的成就。我所经历的是怎样的一个奇迹啊！这是一个充满爱、希望和坚忍的奇迹！




而且，我也可以说自己从这场事故和严重的残疾中学到了许多东西。想象如果今天我依然是箭步如飞，这些东西我是永远无法学到的。所以，我也深为自己这些年里所学会的，所经历到的和所取得的成绩而感恩。我感谢上帝给我机会让我经历这个不同寻常的生命。

此时此刻，我正在准备十月重返圣迭哥，去完成我的毕业实习，为成为一名真正的康复咨询师准备。请各位朋友为我祈祷，谢谢！

特殊的家庭探访

因为一些特殊的原因，我们最近不得不取消了计划中的一些活动，包括在大商场里进行“扶残助残”宣传，带残疾儿童参观消防队，了解消防知识等。尽管如此，我们的工作仍然在顺利地进行着。所不同的是我们把近期的工作转向了家庭探访。



除了进行常规的家庭探访，包括特困残疾家庭探访和助康会教师定期访问残疾学生，我们此次的探访还有不同的目的：

一、

我们此次集中访问了一些前段时间无暇顾及到的家庭，目的是重新与他们建立联系，并及时把关爱、帮助和鼓励带给他们；





二、 为了给残疾儿童建立康复档案，我们特意邀请了来自美国的康复治疗师一起家访，对每名儿童逐一进行检查、评估，以发现他们未来康复治疗的潜力。未来，我们希望可以有一个固定的地方为这些孩子提供康复服务。

One Milestone in My Life

On May 20th, accompanied by my mother and brother, I flew to San Diego, California for the biggest moment in my life - my graduation ceremony for my Masters Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling. Since late 2003, I have been studying in the distance learning program of San Diego State University (SDSU) through the Internet to prepare myself for being a rehabilitation counselor in the future. Now it is the time to harvest.

Obviously the achievement is a miracle for me as a quadriplegic in China, where most disabled people are still struggling to meet their basic needs for survival. It has been a great challenge for me for it is not an easy thing to study such an advanced course in a wheelchair while still leading the Bethesda Ministry, staying involved many other projects, and having to handle my severe disability. Without the help, support, and prayers from so many friends around the world, I do not think that I would have made it.




I can say that the achievement is the result of an "international cooperation." At the very beginning of this incredible odyssey my dear friend Mabel in Hong Kong helped find the program through her friend in Canada after I told her my will to have some formal education on disability issues. Friends in SDSU kindly accepted me as their only student from China and then granted me a scholarship for the program. In the past several years I continuously received help and support from teachers and classmates, for nearly everything I encountered in the class was new for me since I was from such a totally different culture. It was really a wonderful learning experience! Now I am probably the first person to have such education in China.



My close friend, Dr. John Aldis, has been the greatest supporter throughout my entire learning process since my injury. John always believes that having the education has a special meaning for me and is important for my future work serving disabled people. He hopes that I could act as a messenger between China and the United States for people with disabilities in the different worlds. When I hesitated about going to the graduation because of lack of funding, John insisted that I must go for it would be the very important event in my life. He helped with the fundraising then and paid the most part of the expense himself for the trip.



I was very happy to meet my dear friends during my stay in San Diago: Joni, Ken, Judy, Thomas, Victor, Wing, and Sandy, to name a few of them. They came from Hong Kong, Los Angeles, and New York to celebrate with me this important moment in my life. Though very busy with work, John spent one whole week with me, arranging everything for us. We also got great help from Chinese church in San Diego, which once again let us feel the love from Jesus.




Meeting Louis has a special meaning to me. He taught me what the word "independence" really means for a person with a severe disability. He is a quadriplegic with the same level injury me, but he is leading a really independent life. He can drink, eat, and even drive by himself! He is married many years ago and now is leading the independent living center in San Diego ("A2I"), where I will have my internship. One thing he told me is "nothing is impossible if you try."



It was really exciting moment at the Graduation. When driving my wheelchair to the stage to receive my credentials, my mind was soaring wildly. The things that have happened in the past eleven years poured into my thoughts: that darkest day in 1997, the near fatal accident, despair, struggle, love, hope, encouragement, faith - and finally, achievement. What a miracle I have been experiencing -- one full of love, hope, and perseverance! And perseverance not just by me, but by so many friends and supporters. I have learned a lot from my accident and from the severe disability that it caused, including many things that I might never have known if I were still on my feet. I am so grateful for what I have learned, experienced and achieved, and I thank God for giving me this opportunity to experience such an unusual life!



I am preparing my next trip to San Diego right now for my internship as a rehabilitation counselor required by the program. Please pray for me. Thanks to all of you!

Special Home Visitation

For some special reasons, we have to cancel some planned activities recently, like holding an event to promote disability-friendly society and our ministry in the main shopping mall, taking disabled children to a firemen camp to learn knowledge on fire protection. However, our ministry is still running smoothly. The difference is that now we are putting our emphasis on home visitation.




Apart from our regular home-visitation program like visiting very poor families affected by disabilities and our teachers visiting and tutoring students in our distance learning program, we are also making special home visits over this time:



1. We visited some families that we helped before but almost lost contact with them in recent months when we focused more on the families most in need. The purpose of the recent visit was to rebuild our relationship with them and bring love and encouragement to them;



2. To establish a rehabilitation file for children with disability, we had special home visit to them and Sharon ( a rehab therapist from Buffalo ) and her husband Bill examined each of them and evaluated and documented each one's potential for future rehabilitation therapy. We are very thankful to have their help with the work. In the future, we are praying for a place for these children to have needed rehabilitation therapy.

今年的第一次出游

东北的春天总是来得很迟，即使已经到了五月上旬，天气还是让人感到阵阵寒意，今年更是如此。尽管这样，在经历了漫长寒冷的冬季以后，当我们把孩子们带出家门的时候，寒意却无法压抑到他们兴奋和喜乐的心情。



在五月十号那天，助康会带领二十三名残疾儿童他们的家长去鞍山附近的汤河水库游玩，享受那里的美丽景色和清新的空气。和每次出游一样，助康会的志愿者们需要把孩子们搬抬到大客车上。一路上，志愿者们组织各种游戏，大客车里充满了欢声笑语。



到达目的地以后，助康会为孩子们组织了丰富多彩的活动……在简短的轮椅捐赠仪式以后，我们为孩子和家长组织了各种游戏和体育比赛。接下来，我们又举行了一个特殊的仪式来纪念一个特殊的人——安阿姨。我们希望，在面对不幸和灾难时，我们的孩子和家长可以学会安阿姨的爱心、勇敢和勇气。事实上，那天活动的重要部分就是纪念安阿姨。



安是一个美国人，十七岁那年的一场车祸导致她四肢瘫痪。虽然在轮椅上度过了生命的大部分时光，她却从来没有丧失过爱心和勇气。她对生命的积极态度一直在激励身边的人。她非常乐于助人，曾经帮助了西安的一个同样四肢瘫痪的女孩，鼓励她以勇气战胜不幸。她甚至透过亲戚帮助过助康会的出游活动。三个月之前，七十二岁的安阿姨离开了这个世界……在冷风之中，孩子们围坐在一起，听我们的老师分享安阿姨的故事。

新办公室

在一些新加坡朋友的合力祈祷和慷慨资助下，助康会终于有了属于自己的办公室。新办公室位于市中心繁华地带，我们已经于四月二十九日搬入。至此，助康会有了一个明亮和稳定的新家。




这套公寓位于一幢大厦的二十一层，面积为九十多平方米。房间内宽敞明亮，可以俯瞰大部分的鞍山。眼下，我们利用这间办公室作为助康会发展的基地。我们的工作人员每天在其内办公，以保证工作的顺利运行。以后，我们还计划用办公室进行志愿者培训，对残疾儿童家长进行心理辅导，对儿童继续电脑培训……办公室的位置位于市中心，非常便利人们前往。对于拥有这间宽敞的办公室，我们非常感恩。

在上期的新闻通讯中，我们紧急呼吁了残疾儿童对轮椅的需要。之后，我们得到了来自不同地方的朋友积极的响应。在这些朋友的慷慨捐助下，大部分有需要的孩子都得到了他们的新轮椅。在这次的外出活动中，我们进行了一次特殊的轮椅捐赠仪式。在那一天，孩子们得到的新轮椅对他们有特殊的意义。脑瘫儿童顾家琪代表她的小伙伴们做了感恩讲话，感谢朋友们给予他们的爱和关心。在发言结束的时候，她眼含热泪地说：“这台新轮椅给我带来了新的生活。它可能会帮助我实现梦想……”



在此，我们也要感谢您对助康会的支持。
